Make-up artist Orlaith Shore’s guide to the glossy eye on the April issue cover

The glossy eye is as fickle a beauty trend as they come, but the best thing about it is that the longer it’s on, the better it becomes. Alluring and slick as the glossy eye is, this is gonna slide, but that’s okay; an imperfect wet-look that looks a bit lived-in is what you’re going for.

“My favourite type of make-up is the make-up that happens a few hours into wearing it,” says make-up artist Orlaith Shore, who created the sultry glossy eye on the cover of the April issue. “I like when it melts into your skin and colour comes through. We had the same theory with the eye look I created – a lived in, out all night feel, not polished and a little gritty.”

It takes more than a slick of Vaseline across the eye, however, but it’s not too much work.

“To start I roughly lined the top lash line with Charlotte Tilbury’s black kohl pencil liner,” advises Orlaith, “and I used my ring finger to buff it out. I followed with black gel liner on the waterline, inside and on the lashline for intensity. Then using the Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate palette I washed the contour colour over the lid and below the lash line, almost as a blending colour.”

Don’t be too precious about your eyes smudging – there’s no perfect version of this look. And once you don’t end up looking like you have conjunctivitis, it actually looks a bit better when it’s messy. Check yourself in the mirror and rub away any bleeding gloss, and to tidy up any shadow or liner that’s gathering in eye creases, you can just pat more gloss into place. Simple.

“What really makes this eye is when the oils from the wearer’s eye starts to melt it all together,” explains Orlaith. “The longer it’s on, the more lived in it becomes. It’s not an easy look to wear if you are obsessed with checking your make-up and perfection, it’s definitely for those of us who love the imperfect!”
