Angelina Jolie’s planned Cleopatra movie may be scuppered thanks to the Sony email leaks, but her next potential movie role sounds a million times better. Which is a tough observation to make?when you’re talking about a female pharaoh.

The actress and humanitarian bought the rights to a biography of Catherine the Great by historian?Simon Sebag Montefiore, the Daily Mail reports.?Catherine The Great And Potemkin: The Imperial Love Affair isn’t your traditional biography however, focusing more on The Russian leader’s’very busy love life as opposed to government building. Think less The Young Victoria –?boring movie with great costumes -and more HBO does history.

Catherine, an empress and one of most effective female leaders in history, enjoyed an open relationship?with Grigory Potemkin, one of her allies in the royal court who it is rumoured she married in secret after the death of her husband, Tsar Peter III. Catherine found herself on the throne after Peter was murdered in a convenient coup. While Catherine took various lovers following her productive mourning period, it was?Potemkin who would remain the one she trusted most. The pair ruled from the throne together and Catherine’s reign is regarded as a golden age in history. It certainly sounds like it will one dramatic movie.

Jolie’s role in the movie so far isn’t concrete. While she’d be beyond perfect in the main regal role, she could also appoint herself director. The 40-year-old actress has spoken in interviews about how she would prefer to concentrate on directing. Her recent effort, Unbroken, recouped its budget twice over but received rather lukewarm reviews in general.
