A Phone Screen That Won’t Give You Spots?

We’re going to come clean and admit that our smartphones have given us breakouts. Really ughhhh-where-did-that-come-from sore cheeks breakouts. At first, we were worried our hormones had decided that our chins were coping just fine with the monthly onslaught and wanted to present another personal challenge. But then internet research and anecdotal investigations laid the blame at that thing giving us cramped fingers and squinty eyes – our smartphones.

Yes, smartphones are filthy germ carriers, and once they’ve hit you up with a serious case of blocked pores, you learn to clean their glass screens religiously. Handy as it is, having the world at your fingertips, you have to remember your smartphone is touching up against a lot of germs – your handbag, tables in coffee shops, your own grimy-at-times hands.

However, one Chinese electronics company is hoping to change things. ZTE is working on developing an antimicrobial glass for the touchscreen on their Axon smartphone. They’re already calling it Gorilla Glass, according to an Allure report, and this EPA-registered glass has built-in properties that will stave off certain types of bacteria. Here’s hoping other companies follow suit.

Allure quotes Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research of the dermatology department at New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital, about the benefits of this new technology for people concerned about their skin: “This new glass could help reduce the amount of harmful microbes on the phone’s surface and help minimize the risk of infections, folliculitis, and the spreading of bacteria. – Yay! However, ?You’ll still need to clean off the dirt and oil on the phone before you place it on your cheek.” Still, one small step is a step we’ll take in a bid to stop breakouts.
