‘Woken by sound of bomb attacks’: Irish charity partner in Ukraine takes cover with her son

‘We are under attack’. The message comes to the office of Irish-registered charity Team Hope by WhatsApp, sent by a partner in Odessa in southern Ukraine. With her son (9) and elderly parents, she finds protection in the basement of their apartment building when she’s not sourcing medical supplies for the army.

“Morning in the bomb shelter.” “We are under artillery attack right now. Can’t send any photos for security reasons.” These are the kind of updates that are coming to the Dublin office of Irish International aid charity Team Hope by WhatsApp from their Ukrainian partner. The messages are accompanied by disturbing photos of tanks and bunkers used for shelter. These chilling and brave communications come from their “partner and friend” in the city of Odessa...
