The Moschino x H&M launch party at Annabel’s nightclub in London on Tuesday night was always going to be one of the most spectacular fashion parties of this season. After all, Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott is known as “fashion’s last rebel”, and has been labelled fashion’s version of Andy Warhol. He’s gained notoriety worldwide for dressing outlandish celebrities such as Katy Perry, Rihanna, Madonna and Lady Gaga in avant-garde costumes that combine pop culture with street style. The party was always going to be an over-the-top affair.

Fashion director Marie Kelly wears Elizabeth & James tuxedo jacket, Joanne Hynes sequinned top, Rockins scarf, Topshop leather trousers, Kurt Geiger boots, MoMuse skull earrings and vintage bag to the Moschino x H&M launch party in Annabel’s nightclub in Mayfair.

As a guest of H&M, I arrived at Annabel’s in London’s Mayfair (a private members club) to a huddle of paparazzi, all of whom gave me and the rest of the Irish press a cursory once-over just to be sure none of us was “someone”. Then we descended into the basement of the exquisite Georgian mansion, which houses the club, to a fantastical wonderland of brass and glass palm tree lamps, hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper and gilded ceilings. Ornate doesn’t begin to describe the scene. Cocktails and champagne flowed freely, while waiters served canapés including lobster and mango rolls, grilled octopus and bite-sized hamburgers, throughout the evening.

The venue was certainly spectacular but so was the fashion on show there. Anything goes in London. It’s a city full of vibrant, confident characters, and women arrived wearing everything from a tweed shorts suit and green sequinned mini dress to a Moschino sweater dress. Scott himself wore a pair of gold chain-covered leather trousers and matching jacket from the collection. Madonna, a long-time supporter of Scott’s, arrived at 1.50am (and she’s 60… impressive) wearing an oversized gold sequinned jacket from the collection. Beth Ditto, Ashlee Simpson, Jade Thirwall (of pop group Little Mix) also showed up on the night to lend their support to the American designer.

It was a night of decadence and eccentricity, but one full of fun and laughs. We danced, we drank, and then we danced some more…

The Moschino x H&M collection is available online and in the College Green store from today.
