Nothing to wear tonight? Here’s how to dress up denim and make it Saturday-night fabulous

Women often think they have to abandon their signature style on a big Saturday night out and get “dressed up”, ie, dress like someone else, someone who loves sequins and embellishment and all things glittery and gold. But what if your style is minimalist or utilitarian? How do you equate these dress codes with a night out on the town? The answer is to remain true to your own style, but think about how you can adapt it to suit a special occasion. Here’s how I’d dress up denim for a big Saturday night out.

Choose a metallic coated jean. You’ll stay in your comfort zone but add freshness to your look as well as a nod to all things glitzy and glamorous.

Skinny black satin-finish denim jeans create a strong party vibe when paired with a camisole top and sparkly belt. I would throw a black blazer over this to add a touch of sophistication.

Try a pair of denims with embroidered detailing. These butterfly motif jeans from Maje have a lovely point of difference that elevates them above conventional denim. You could also buy felt patches in a haberdashery and sew or glue them (use fabric glue of course) onto your own jeans. All these denims need is a great pair of heels to make them perfect party wear. I absolutely love the frilled white blouse they’ve been styled with too.

Mix your denim with softer, more evening-like textures and statement jewellery. This silk-like top and jewelled earrings add instant glamour to a pair of paperbag waist jeans. The shoes are super-sexy also. They’re not terribly high but your foot will look almost naked in them.
