Autumn’s number one trend might surprise you

With autumn on its way, it’s time to re-evaluate our wardrobes and decide which trends to invest in. This season’s number one trend might surprise you

Seeing gaggles of young teenagers back in their school uniforms completely blindsided me on my morning commute this week. Is summer really over? The June bank holiday feels like yesterday and I am not prepared for autumn just yet.

We didn’t exactly have a long hot summer, but that doesn’t make the changing of the seasons any easier. In fashion terms, this transitional time is quite a difficult period and now is the time to take stock and audit your wardrobe. How should you shape it? What are your key pieces? Is there something you can purchase to complete its structure?

Leather

Trends come and go and many believe it’s a bad idea to buy into the hype. But some trends stand the test of time and one of those is leather. Leather in winter isn’t exactly breaking news, but this season it appeared in a variety of different guises on the AW19 catwalks.

We’re all familiar with the classic leather jacket and skinny trouser, but have you ever thought about leather tailoring, shirting, dresses or culottes? Because that is what AW19 is giving us.

Check out & Other Stories’ leather blazer – it’s not cheap, but it is an absolute forever piece. River Island has taken heed of the success of the all-in-one boiler suit and designed a pair of stand-out leather dungarees, which look equally comfortable and chic.

If the price of leather sends you into a tizzy or you prefer to stay away from the real thing, there is a multitude of faux and vegan options available that will still give you this on-trend look.

Free People is an expert on vegan leather and offers everything from trousers and boots to jackets and berets.

H&M does a beautiful imitation and its cream wide-leg pant would look great with a simple knit and trainers, while Asos is more directional with its faux leather midi dress.
