IMAGE’s Must-Have Beauty Picks For Autumn

by Jennifer McShane

Here at IMAGE, we’re loving the autumnal season already. September gives us so many things to look forward to; chunky knitwear, cosy nights in with Netflix ( a couple of nights a week max, promise) and in terms of beauty, this writer loves a good berry lip like almost nothing else. It’s a time of change and your’makeup bag needs a clear out too . Dryer, colder weather means swapping the products you couldn’t live without during the summer months for some old (or new) reliables and here, the IMAGE team shares the beauty finds they won’t be without into the winter:

A ‘new me’ lipstick

Autumn is the time of year my beauty routine gets a total overhaul and the first thing I buy is a new lipstick. I tire of pink and favour it’s darker sister, berry, and Clinique’s Pop Liquid Matte Lipstick in Sweetheart Pop (?20)?is my new favourite; it lasts all day and the addition of the primer means your lips don’t dry out, something all lipstick wearers dread during the winter months. Their liquid lipstick range has just landed in Ireland and I want the lot.

The ‘give me a glow’ product

This is a really old product, but I always find myself returning to Benefits Girl Meets Pearl?(?31.50) when the weather gets colder. As well as giving me a healthy glow, It’s soft, gentle and gives my skin a warm/pinky complexion.

The essential body oil

Neutrogena Body Oil, because my skin always starts getting really dry at this time of year and it’s the best and fastest way to moisturise my skin.

The ‘I-can’t-live-without’ primer

For me, it is Benefit POREfessional face primer (?34).?In the same way I find trans-seasonal dressing hard, I also have difficulties with make-up with this time of year. The weather is turning chilly but the central heating is on indoors, with the result that my foundation is often sliding off my face. This primer is light, so I don’t feel over-producted putting a slick on after moisturiser, SPF50 and before foundation and it certainly stops the dreaded shine. Added bonus: it also reduces the appearance of fine lines.

The perfect day-to-night makeup

I don’t believe in ‘daytime’ and ‘nighttime’ makeup, much preferring the wear-what-the-heck-you-like-when-you-like approach – much more fun. Similarly I’m not a fan of seasonal trends, which are always the same anyway: light/pastels/corals for spring/summer, smouldering greys/browns/purples and burnished/deep reds for autumn/winter. Zzzz.

That said, I will be regularly indulging in Chanel’s new Le Rouge collection, which screams ‘Fall’ colours and will add heat to crisp days and nights. Unfortunately, for drama queens like moi, they look much brighter/darker in their pots than when they’re on, but once they’re all combined, it’s a strong look. Press Rouge Contraste (No.132) all over the eyelid, followed by a dash of Illusion D’Ombre Rouge Brulee (No.128 – a superb copper) in the centre and into socket line, and also below the lower lash line. Blend; then roughly line the upper and lower lashes with Stylo Yeux Waterproof pencil (No. 929 Agape). Smudge. Use whatever mascara and blusher and then finish off with a finger-smudged slick of Rouge Allure lipstick (No.58/ Rouge Vie) – also flouting received wisdom about dramatic eye/nude lip vs nude eye/strong lip. To hell with rules.

The ultimate dry skin buster

A product I have been using for the last few winters is Ren Vita Mineral Emollient Rescue Cream (?27). My skin gets super dry coming into autumn and I would have quite sensitive skin so this ticks a couple of boxes for a moisturiser.

The old reliable

I can’t live without my Nivea chapstick! It’s basic and has been around forever, I find it is the only one that hydrates and eliminates those pesky creases in the lip.
