As part of our Dyson decluttering series, interiors expert and organising aficionado Orla Neligan shares how to declutter and clean what is often the messiest room in the house.

Many of us simply close the doors on our kids’ bedrooms, not able to face the tornado of mess that lies within.

Between boxes of toys tipped onto the floor and trails of crumbs left from snack time, it can be hard to know where to begin.

But putting some order on this space will not only bring you some peace of mind, it will also benefit your kids, who will be able to find things more easily, and allow them to enjoy the space more.

What’s more, it’s much easier to keep the space clean when everything has its place. Here are Orla’s tips for giving your kids’ rooms a declutter and clean.

1. If your kids’ rooms are anything like mine it’s likely you’re walking into the scene of a natural disaster that will make you want to turn on your heel and run. To make it easier and accessible to a good vacuum, pile everything from the floor onto the bed. Make sure to run the vacuum up the walls, along the skirting and windowsills and into any corners.

2. Pull out any loose furniture and clear the way of toys before you start (many a Lego man has been lost in my Dyson!).

3. Kids’ cubbies, windowsills and shelves get so dusty (not to mention the food crumbs) so I like to empty everything, including all books, and give it a good vacuum and clean with a household cleaner and hot water to get rid of any sticky prints.

4. There are so many great stylish storage solutions for kids’ rooms currently on the market that will not only help organise but means you’re not sacrificing aesthetics either. Some good baskets for laundry and larger toys are handy and easily moved and a wall of storage cubes elevates everything off the floor onto the wall.

Handy tip: Invest in drawer inserts that help keep items in their designated places.

Dyson V15 Detect

For a vacuum cleaner that adapts to any situation, the Dyson V15 Detect not only uses a precisely-angled laser to make invisible dust visible on hard floors – so you don’t miss anything, but it also has a sensor to continuously analyse dust particles, automatically increasing suction power when needed.

And so you’re left in no doubt about the results, the LCD screen shows what’s been sucked up, displaying real-time scientific proof of a deep clean.

Its cordless, light design means it’s perfect for getting into every corner, including shelves, furniture, and walls, so every inch of your space is dust-free. And whether you’re cleaning a hard floor, carpet, or soft furnishing, it will adapt its power.
