Meet the Future Makers 2018

Each graduate year yields a fresh crop of creative talent, and the proof is in the pudding when you take a closer look at this year’s Future Makers winners.

For the last nine years, the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland have invited student and emerging designers and craftspeople to apply to one of the largest prize-funded award programmes of its kind in Europe, offering very practical, and much welcome, financial support.

This year, 22 creatives were awarded supports totalling €23,500 after a judging process that included Claudia Casali, Director of International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy, and Philip Hamilton, Creative Director of Perch, Dublin. Here’s a few of our favourites.

Aoife May Soden

These glass vases in taupe and blue are striking in their simplicity.

Egle Banyte

The clean lines and perfect geometrical shapes of Egle’s jewellery contrast beautifully with delicate blue strings that make you want to play with the diabolos.

Nicole Hutchinson

The strong colours, confident shapes and graphic element of Nicole’s work makes a real statement, while the embossing invites you to reach out and touch it.

Lily Read

The clean shapes, three dimensional and graphic lines of Lily Read’s geometric jewellery are “produced with power, balance and precision”, according to judges.

Maureen Laverty

Maureen Laverty, a product design student, won the Innovation Award for seeing what’s possible with new technologies and traditional materials.

Bonnie Kavanagh

The hearts look so fragile, one would be nervous to touch them. The white porcelain is angelic, delicate, almost brittle and reminds us of how valuable life is.

Raychel Murphy
A modern twist to traditional embroidery with a touch of frankness added in. Very pretty and young at heart.
