While Storm Hannah may be making herself at home uninvited this weekend, there are still plenty of ways to take shelter and have a great time while doing it. From exhibitions to discussions, and plenty in the way of sustainable fashion (it is Fashion Revolution week after all), you won’t be stuck in the mud this week. Happy weekend from IMAGE!
Unless you’ve been living with your head under a rock (or just slacking on your IMAGE.ie reading), you’ll know the wastage and huge damage to the planet that fast fashion does is a massive concern.
We should all be doing more to curb our buying habits and shop more sustainably, and projects like Fashion Revolution Week are brilliant ways to get started if you have no idea where to begin. With events all across the country this week; including swap shops, sustainable fashion shows, discussions and conferences; this is the time to learn about how your clothes are damaging the planet, and begin to do something about it.
The ‘Ode to Urbanity’ exhibition is the second of its type, after Taproot’s hugely successful benefit auction for homelessness in January. This time, the artwork is dedicated solely to urban Irish art, and 50% of the proceeds raised will go towards Inner City Helping Homeless* and the other 50% to the artists themselves.
Curated by Taproot Art founder Sophie Murphy, and partnering with street art collective SUBSET, the exhibition will feature a number of Irish street artists, as well as a large scale piece accompanied by a VR interactive installation by SUBSET themselves.
There will also be brilliant music on the night from a number of great Irish hip-hop artists, and a live auction. Taproot is also accepting donations of white socks for men and chocolate on the night — items that are widely desired by rough sleepers, and needed for ICHH homeless outreach distribution.
The inimitable Rose McGowan, actress, activist and one of the most vocal supporters of the #MeToo movement, will be appearing in Dublin on Saturday for an evening about her incredible work over the past few years. Premiering music from her upcoming album, reading extracts from her bestselling book Brave and speaking in discussion with journalist Sam Baker, the evening looks like a brilliant one for anyone interested in feminism, activism and how to just be a better human in general. Tickets are still available from €24.50.
What kind of weekend would it be if we didn’t recommend something in the Bernard Shaw? In keeping with the sustainable fashion theme of the week, Designers in the City is back for its third edition, with the usual fun of showcasing some of the city’s brightest new designers and allowing interested shoppers to take a look.
The evening will also include a panel discussion on how our fashion consumption has an economic and social impact. It’s a free event, but spaces are limited, so be sure to grab your tickets quick.
Whether you’re a budding (excuse the pun) grower of orchids, or just like to take time out on a Sunday to look at pretty flowers, the annual Orchid Fair at the Botanic Gardens will be a welcome escape from the raging weather.
