Chrissy Teigen was?candid about her years of fertility struggles prior to announcing that she and husband singer John Legend were expecting a baby girl after undergoing IVF treatment. The model and cookbook?author?who has been married to Legend since 2013, said that she was constantly asked about when she was starting a family. Something which was actually very hurtful because it wasn’t happening for her at the time, ?So, anytime somebody asks me if I’m going to have kids, I’m like, ?One day, you’re going to ask that to the wrong girl who is really struggling, and it’s going to be really hurtful to them.? And I hate that. So, I hate it. Stop asking me.?
Since then, Teigen revealed that she and Legend chose to have a baby girl rather than a boy, and the pregnant model has also explained why they made that choice, following backlash on social media.
“I made the decision,” she told People. “Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from the little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’ I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me; the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves that bond. But John definitely is very lucky to have a little girl. And this girl is going to be so completely lucky to have John as her papa – it’s crazy! A boy will come along. We’ll get there, too, so it’s not like we really have to pick.”
Amid the backlash, the model took to Twitter to voice her response.
“This is all so interesting,” she tweeted. “I said it so casually because I’m just open. I’m around so many open-minded people and forgot it’s controversial. From reading everything tonight, I think I made a mistake in thinking people understood the process better than they do, which is my fault. We didn’t create a little girl. We had multiple embryos; girls and boys. We simply chose to put in a female first and second. We didn’t ‘throw away’ anything and still would love to have more of both in the future. Anyhow, I am not mad at anyone’s beliefs but I don’t really actively seek out people to make them feel bad about their decisions either.”
