Tactile yet tasteful, with a glint of muted metallics… This autumn/winter we’re recapturing opulence at its most pure with the new luxury.

Having taken something of a backseat to Scandi-inspired minimalism for the past few seasons, unapologetic luxury is having a definite comeback for?autumn/winter 2015. We’re seeing?an irresistible infusion of glamour in everything from light fittings to furniture.

Everywhere you look, rich, warm jewel tones, decadent fabrics and sleek finishes?are?boldly taking centre stage. But while gold-accented opulence is at the heart of this trend, it isn’t the flashy glitz of the old Hollywood era. This season, contemporary designers are reinventing the concept of ‘luxury’?as not so much a statement but rather a state of mind.?More blissful than bling, this mature variation on classic luxury radiates self-contained grandeur in the form of organic shapes, high-quality finishes and sumptuously soft furnishings.

The?Indulgence collection by John Lewis, autumn/winter 2015

Discussing the trend, UK retailer John Lewis emphasise that??our homes have become more than just places to live – they are retreats. Those with this mindset will invest in quality tailoring and accessories whose style will endure.? The plush John Lewis Indulgence line is based on’rewarding yourself at every opportunity – with everything from home fragrances to luxe textiles such as cashmere – and not feeling guilty about it. Reframing the negative connotations surrounding the idea of self-indulgence, this isn’t glamour just for glamour’s sake. The new luxury is about?investing in ourselves and our living spaces.?

This idea of the home as sanctuary informs the new luxury at every turn. Marks & Spencer set the mood perfectly with a peacock-inspired palette and lush accessories in glossy marble, polished brass and crushed velvet. In the world of fabrics, we are seeing a corresponding move towards more lavish materials, sophisticated patterns and deeper colours. Brocades, jacquards and damasks are all back in vogue. Elsewhere, the trend has translated into spun-gold accents, padded upholstery and a return to ?cocktail culture?.

While quality materials and a decadent mood are integral to this trend, personality is still paramount. It has glamour at its roots, but it can be approached in a number of different ways – from edgy luxury in the form of statement lighting?to?historical glamour with gilded antique pieces or fusion styling that blends?old and new elements. Whatever your preferred style, ultimately it’s about comfort, reflecting love for yourself and your space.?
