Nika died of breast cancer at just 33.

Actress and daughter of former boxing champion Barry McGuigan Danika McGuigan has passed away aged 33.

Danika, known as Nika to her friends and family, died after a short battle against breast cancer.

Nika appeared in several Irish and international productions, and was famed for playing Danielle in RTÉ comedy Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope. She recently completed filming on Wildfire, a film directed by Cathy Brady.

In a statement issued through her agents at The Agency, Nika’s family and friends said they were “devastated” at the loss of the 33 year old.

“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beautiful daughter and sister, Danika “Nika” McGuigan.

After a brief but brave battle against cancer, Nika passed away peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday 23rd July, surrounded by her loving family.”

In an Instagram post, Nika’s brother Shane revealed that she had previously battled with cancer as an adolescent.

He wrote: “She overcame it once with a two year fight when she was 11 to 13. Myself, my brothers and parents were privileged to have another 20 years since the first battle with our amazing Nika.

Unfortunately Nika couldn’t beat it again but she fought so bravely until the end. I have memories that I’ll cherish for a lifetime and you will live on forever in spirit.”

According to the Irish Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer affecting women in Ireland. While the majority of women who get breast cancer are between 50-64, 23% of those diagnosed are under 50 – which is why it’s so important to know how to check your breasts for any irregularities.
