‘Godfather of AI’ quits Google
Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, who was often dubbed “the godfather of artificial intelligence” for the creation of a foundation technology for AI systems, has quit his job at Google to speak out about the dangers of the technology, telling The New York Times that advancements made in the field posed “profound risks to society and humanity”.
Belfast collision
A man has been arrested following a collision close to a Belfast police station. A number of homes close to Castlereagh station were evacuated following the incident, which involved one vehicle. One man was arrested and is in police custody.
EU Sudan response
Defence and security expert Declan Power warns that the EU is not as well-placed to respond to the crisis in Sudan as it should be arising out of its continued focus on the war in Ukraine. He said the EU would normally be in a position to respond “more speedily” to the conflict which broke out earlier this month between Sudan’s army and paramilitary forces. He warned that the EU is struggling to be relevant as Russia’s veto is being used to “cynically undermine the West’s elements of cohesion”.
Pharmacies to assess and treat minor ailments
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said that the proposed scheme would allow people to bypass attending their GP to get a prescription, allowing pharmacists to directly provide medication for certain illnesses. “The intention is to enable eligible patients to attend their local community pharmacist for assessment and treatment for a number of identified ailments rather than initially having to attend the GP to obtain a prescription,” Donnelly said.

Council tenants’ rent
The Government hopes to add the equivalent of 28,000 homes across the country by allowing council tenants to rent out rooms in their houses for up to €14,000 a year, tax-free. Under the current Rent-a-Room scheme, property owners can rent out rooms in their houses and apartments for €14,000 tax-free per year.
