Ireland is on course to miss 2030 climate targets

According to EPA, Ireland is set to miss its 2030 climate targets by a large margin unless all sectors, including agriculture, electricity and transport, rapidly deliver further emission reductions and sustain this delivery into the future. Its latest projections show that if all climate policies and measures currently planned are fully implemented, Ireland will achieve only a 29% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, well short of the legally binding 51% reduction target.

Taxi driver arrested

A man has been arrested by police in Co Down after a video emerged on social media appearing to show him threatening a passenger with a gun. The taxi firm firing the driver, and the incident was placed under investigation by the PSNI. “Detectives investigating a video circulating online showing a man with a suspected firearm have arrested a 48-year-old man,” a spokesperson said. “He has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including possession of a firearm or imitation firearm and he remains in custody at this time.”

Criminal Assets Bureau probe

A woman whose husband was targeted for a Criminal Assets Bureau search refused to hand over her engagement ring to officers, telling them they would have to “cut her finger off” to get it.
Joyce Partridge tried to swallow it when she was told it was being seized as part of the CAB investigation. The case was struck out, leaving her without a criminal conviction after Partridge made a €300 charity donation.

Housing demands

Demand for new homes has more than doubled in the last year, reinforcing the “desperate need” for increased supply. Analysis carried out by Daft.ie notes a surge in enquiries sent to property listings in most parts of the country last year, with the nationwide demand for homes up by 17%.
