The Katie Jane Hughes guide to festive grown-up glitter

The Katie Jane Hughes guide to festive grown-up glitter

See out a muted year with aureate flourishes, inspired by celebrity and editorial make-up artist Katie Jane Hughes.

Thank the Y2K redux, the billionaire space race or a need to revolt from last year’s muted revelry but, having appeared in flashes over the last few seasons, for AW22, it’s time for sci-fi metallic lacquers, fine glitter, and diamanté decals to shine. For statement-making make-up, look to celebrity and editorial make-up artist Katie Jane Hughes. Her powers of incandescent skin and scintillating details have seen her lend a hand developing Glossier products, gained her over 800k Instagram followers for her thumb- stopping tutorials, and ready Hailey Bieber, Ashley Graham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley with her signature gleam. Now, she says, is the time for “fun, creative, playful things where people take a chance.”

Her glittering eye prescription is to “start with a little and build it up to how you want it.” Peeking details pack just as strong a punch – even a sweep of sparkle on the centre of the lid will brighten instantly. Keep the rest simple with fresh skin, but don’t just stick to silver or gold. “I always encourage people to play with colour,” says Hughes. “Make-up isn’t permanent – it washes off!” Like a pair of statement earrings, “the final look should appear like you, but accessorised.”
