Try A Tunic Over Trousers This Season

Try A Tunic Over Trousers This Season

I love layering, so by default I love the tunic-over-trousers look that’s been a sporadic favourite among the fashion pack over the past several years. My first tunic/trouser combination was bought in H&M in London about 18 years ago (I remember because at the time shopping in H&M was a thrilling experience as the store hadn’t yet arrived in Dublin). The trousers have long since died, but I’m’still wearing the tunic dress (in fact, I’m wearing it today) and still loving this look. Here are some tunic dresses to try if you’re looking to revamp your autumn/winter wardrobe.

I like ribbed knits because they offer texture but are neat instead of bulky like some woollens. I’d buy this Zara piece in a size up and layer it over a skinny turtleneck and cropped or wide-leg trousers.

Ribbed tunic with splits, €7.99 (reduced from €29.95) at Zara

A tunic over trousers is a great way to reinvent your cocktail wear. This elegant piece would look stunning over cropped silk trousers and worn with an elegant ankle-strap heel or high heel court.

I know I keep saying it, but everyone needs a turtleneck in their wardrobe this season. I love the earthy shade of green and oversized shape of this tunic dress from & Other Stories. I’d pair it with boyfriend jeans or leather culottes for a smarter take on the trend.

Experiment with the length of your tunic dress. Ease in with something mid-thigh length, which will feel a little more like an overlong top, then go for a piece that’s’midi-length,?(which I prefer). Play with proportion by pairing your’midi with a cropped trouser. Very cool.

Limited edition tailored dress, €89.95 at Massimo Dutti

I play with layers a lot. A great way to add a layer to your look without adding bulk (which is what most women fear) is by choosing a chiffon tiered piece like this dress from Mint Velvet. Worn over trousers, it has the appearance of looking multi-layered when in fact there are just two items to the outfit. I love this shade of smoky grey too. It’s a warming hue for winter.
