The 2016 BAFTA red carpet was rather demure this year (there were a lot of black dresses). However, it wasn’t an entirely sombre affair, mainly thanks to the ladies flying the flag for Ireland. Laura Whitmore stood out in a beautiful turquoise gown with delicate accessories, and we loved Saoirse’s floral custom-made Burberry and amazing eye make-up. The lads also did us proud; Michael Fassbender was dashing in Burberry, and Domhnall Gleeson was dapper in Armani.

Alicia Vikander’s choice went down a storm; she went dark and dramatic, and paired her embellished leather Louis Vuitton dress with a purple lip and side-swept hair. It was one of the best of the night.

Julianne Moore looked divinely elegant in a cream and black Armani Couture gown (top marks for the bright pink lip), and Dakota Johnson wowed in a red number and matching lip by Dior. Cate Blanchett can be hit-and-miss, but tonight she wore a custom-made Alexander McQueen dress inspired by the SS16 collection and it was perfect. Rooney Mara also looked exquisitely ethereal in a floor-length, appliqu? gown with cut-out shoulder detailing, and her strong, bold red lip and smokey eyeshadow combo elevated the look.

In terms of misses, yours truly was disappointed with Kate Winslet’s LBD. She looked classic and beautiful but she can wear bold, bright colour so well that the all-black choice seemed bland. It was a little too safe.
