Actress Lea Michele Opens Up About Dealing With Grief

When Glee actor Cory Monteith tragically passed away in June 2013, it was a huge shock. His untimely death was sudden, unexpected and he was just 31. Fellow Glee star Lea Michele had been dating Monteith for almost two years, and she was thrust into the limelight for a different reason, as she tried to cope publicly with the tragedy. Their romance was straight from a fairytale; they met playing love interests on the hit show and soon fell in love in real life, remaining together until Monteith’s passing. Michele dealt with her grief in a touching and private manner, something that was surely very difficult given the circumstances. She repeatedly?thanked the public for all their support, and relied on her family, friends and co-stars as she tried to digest what had happened.

Two years on, she has spoken about how she coped with the grief, and how she finally feels happy, and ready to love again. Michele told Flare Magazine that the road to recovery began with finding peace inside herself. ?I wanted to make sure that I was okay with me, feeling strong and feeling happy on my own,? she said. ?I didn’t want anybody to fill any holes for me, I wanted to make sure that I was a whole person again and that no one was coming into my life to put me back together.?

She explained that she had to deal with Monteith’s death on her own, in her own way, before being able to come out the other side. She added that she dealt with the hardship and pushed herself to get to a place of joy again. ?I worked very, very, very hard, and I got back to that place where I was genuinely happy and strong and ready to live again and see the world and bring in more beautiful experiences.?

The actress and singer added that once she had come to terms with everything that had happened, ‘someone miraculously came into my life.? The someone being boyfriend, Matthew Patez. Michele has indeed come out the other side, and has written a new self-help book, due out next month, on the back of her experiences.

She?will also be seen in her first role post-Glee, in Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens, and said that she is excited about positive messages for women in the show: ?I think that the feminist message in Scream Queens is that girls are f-cking badass. Ryan was saying the show is totally girl power. It’s mainly a female cast, all of whom are incredibly talented, strong and successful women. But also, think of any scary movie: it’s not the strong man that survives in the end; it’s the girl. Girls are so much stronger than they know and especially more than society makes them believe they are.?
