Friends reunion special may start filming next month, says David Schwimmer

David Schwimmer answered some long-awaited questions about the upcoming Friends reunion

When the cast of Friends announced a reunion special earlier this year, we were beyond excited. It was supposed to originally air in May but was postponed due to pandemic restrictions.

However, the reunion may be coming earlier than expected. David Schwimmer recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and answered some long-awaited questions about the upcoming special.

When asked about the new air date, Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller on the show, said filming could start as early as next month.

“It’s supposed to happen maybe in August, the middle of August,” he explained.

“But, honestly, we’re going to wait and see another week or two if we all determine it’s really safe enough to do. And if not, then we’ll wait until it’s safe.”

What we know

The much anticipated reunion episode will feature Schwimmer and his former co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry.

Unlike the previous series, this one-off special will be unscripted, making it more of an interview than a follow-up episode.

“It’s basically a really fun interview and then some other surprise bits,” said Schwimmer.

The on-screen reunion will air on the streaming platform HBO Max.

Schwimmer almost turned down the role

During his appearance on The Tonight Show, Schwimmer revealed that he almost turned down the role of playing Ross.

The actor said he had a “miserable experience” with his first job as a series’ regular just before FriendsHe vowed to never do another sitcom and moved from LA to Chicago to focus on theatre work.

“I got the call from my agent about Friends and I just said ‘No, I’m not doing it’,” said Schwimmer.

It wasn’t until the show’s co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane reached out to him and said they had created the role of Ross with him in mind that he accepted the job.

Kauffman and Crane had remembered the actor from an audition a year earlier and could not picture anyone else better suited for the character.

Fast-forward to now, 15 years after the famous 90s sitcom ended, and I don’t think we could picture any other actors in the iconic Friends’ roles.

Hopefully, the reunion can start filming safely and fans can finally see the long-awaited reunion special.
