We’ve found your next great bingeable wrong-com series
If, like us, Rivals season two has left a binge-worthy television-hole in your life, allow us to introduce you to Alice and Steve.
A buzzy new British comedy series ticks many boxes in our lives. It gives us fodder for conversations in the office, keeps the WhatsApp group chats firing, and gives us something to look forward to at the end of a long day. Disney+ has been on quite the roll so far this year, and after inhaling the new season of Rivals, the IMAGE staffers were left scratching their heads as to what to watch next.
Enter Alice and Steve, the new six-episode British must-watch that’s heralding in a new era of television: the wrong-com. Having just landed on Disney+, Alice and Steve is from the producers of Baby Reindeer and Sex Education, and won best comedy at CANNESERIES this year, so you already know you’re in for a good time.

Written by Sophie Goodhart and starring the legendary Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, The Split), Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Avatar, Flight of the Conchords), Joel Fry (Curella) and Yali Topol Margalith (The Tattooist of Auschwitz), the show is being billed as the ultimate anti-romcom.
The plot
What happens when your 26-year-old daughter starts dating your best friend?
Alice and Steve have been best friends for over 30 years. Can all that time, shared memories and bone-deep bond withstand something so mind-boggling? Alice tries everything she can to end the relationship. Unfortunately for her, Steve’s more than ready for the attack, and what begins as a perfect friendship devolves into an all-out feud. A hilarious, messy, and complicated exploration of friendship, family, and love, Alice and Steve asks the question, how far would you go for love – or revenge?

Funny, tangled and thought-provoking, the show does not point to a clear-cut villain. It leaves it up to the audience to decide where they stand on either side of the central dilemma. It also invites the viewer to engage with the wider conversations about age-gap relationships and how they’re perceived by those on the periphery. Modern love and dating will always be catnip when it comes to good television, and the fall-out conversations this series brings about are going to be really intriguing. Water cooler chat be damned, let’s get into the nitty-gritty while discussing this one.
