Five of the best films from your childhood to watch over Christmas

Five of the best films from your childhood to watch over Christmas

You’ve done Elf, Love Actually (twice), The Holiday, Home Alone and The Christmas Prince. The well has run dry for films. You peaked too early. So why not take a trip back in time to the movies you loved as a child- the best stuff never gets old, right?

These films don’t necessarily have a Christmas theme but they are perfect for a nostalgic duvet night. Pure joy- especially if you introduce them to a whole new generation of nieces, nephews, cousins and kids.

I Am Sam (2001)

Sean Penn returned to the big screen after an extended break to play a man with a mental age of 7 fighting for custody of his daughter (Dakota Fanning). Uplifting and tear-jerking in equal measure with an incredible soundtrack featuring Rufus Wainwright’s stunning cover of The Beatles’ Across the Universe.

Uptown Girls (2003)

More prime Dakota: Brittany Murphy plays the ‘grown-up’ daughter of a dead rock superstar, who has never worked a day in her life but learns an awful lot when she becomes Dakota’s nanny.

Jumanji (1995)

Robin Williams vs Jack Black? No contest.

Black Beauty (1994)

The most recent adaptation of Anna Sewell’s classic book was narrated by Eli from The Good Wife (Alan Cumming) and is at heart a tremendous love story, even if it is between a boy and a horse.

A Little Pincess (1995)

The riches-to-rags story of a brave little girl at the mercy of an evil headmistress and fate was Alfonso Cuaron’s very first feature so it’s no wonder it stands the test of time. With Liam Cunningham.
