With Kate Middleton and Prince William celebrating 10 years of marriage, attention has been focused once again on her Alexander McQueen/Sarah Burton wedding gown. Her ivory dress featured a 2.7m train, a satin bodice and hand-cut Chantilly lace sleeves. A traditional form of lace – Carrickmacross – was used in the making of the gown to represent “something old”, derived from the saying that is said to bring brides good luck on their wedding day.

Iconic gowns have stayed iconic because they have elevated bridal design to new heights, inspired trends and each dress, the epitome of grace and elegance, was wearable and contemporary. Royal weddings have provided many of the most memorial bridal moments – who can’t picture Princess Diana (whose own creation will go on exhibit in Kensington Palace this summer) or Grace Kelly in their gowns? – but equally, many a celebrity gown has proven just as popular, from Keira Knightley’s Chanel tulle to Kate Moss’ ethereal John Galliano number.
