12 fun hobbies for lazy people to try during self-isolation

Getting a little sick of the usual TV selection? Take up a hobby that’s easy to keep going throughout the pandemic

Ireland’s lockdown has been extended to April 19. And while this is a smart strategy to curve the current pandemic, it also means that we are housebound until the end of the month (at least).

However, most people seem to be taking things particularly well. The internet is flooded with motivational articles and declarations of productivity. My mates have been writing into the group chats with things like: “I’m running every day”, “I’ve started learning French”, “I’m redecorating the house”.

Well, reader, I don’t know about you, but I am still waiting to be bit by the productivity bug. For me, the productivity myth is overrated.

So, what can we lazy folk do to curb boredom and still have fun?

Here are 12 unique, creative hobbies to take up during self-isolation:

1. Jigsaw puzzling

Puzzling is a great way to get out of your head. It not only gives you something to focus on, but also provides that satisfying sense of accomplishment when it’s finally finished. Here are some cool and colourful jigsaw puzzles to try.

2. Knitting

It’s never too early to get started on Christmas presents, and it’s super easy to learn. Order needles and yarn online and watch a few YouTube how-to videos.

3. Adult colouring books

Warning: Colouring is highly addictive, but it’s a great form of self-care therapy. Plus, there’s no skill-learning required. Find some super cool colouring books on Amazon.

4. True crime podcasts

Give your eyes a break and dive into sinister stories of true crime. There are some amazing podcasts out right now, that you won’t be able to pull yourself away from.

5. Cooking

Tired of your go-to meals? Want something different? These cookbooks are filled with easy, healthy recipes to try.

6. Scrapbooking

It’s time to dig out that box of keepsakes from under the bed and get creative. You can cut things out or print photos and make a memorable scrapbook.

7. Cocktail making

Spice things up by trying new cocktail recipes with your favourite drink. This gin spritz is a zingy crowd-pleaser.

8. Join an online book club

Reading seems like an obvious indoor hobby suggestion, but the hardest part is choosing what to read next. Join an online book club for weekly recommendations and find new bookish buddies in the process.

9. Gardening & herb planting

While gardening can seem intimidating to beginners, it’s a lot easier than it looks. Here is a step-by-step guide to starting a vegetable garden.

10. Learn new make-up tutorials

Try some new eyeshadow looks or finesse your contouring skills without overcomplicating it. These beauty influencers have easy, meditative tutorials that soothe and inspire.

11. Submit creative writing or photography to online competitions

Do you write in your spare time? Are you a freelance photographer struggling for work right now? Why not take this time to submit some of your best work to online competitions. Many offer cash prizes and look great on your CV.

12. Learn a Tik Tok dance

If you, like many others including myself, have become hopelessly addicted to Tik Tok, you’ve seen loads of trending footwork tutorials. Give one a try! It just might become your new party trick.
