Summer packing essentials: The basics you’ll wear all holiday long

Struggling to decide what constitutes a holiday must have? Let our packing list be your guide...

Sandals

First things first, footwear. A good pair of shoes is vital on holidays when you’re likely to do more walking than usual. If you’re stuck for suitcase space, classic black is safest as it will go with everything… but be sure to break new shoes in well in advance. Blisters in the heat are no one’s idea of fun!

Shorts

Next up on the summer holiday packing list are shorts. Linen, denim, silk, Bermuda – these days, there’s a style to suit just about everyone. A patterned pair will make a statement, but if you’re going away for longer than just a few days, neutrals are more practical (they’re versatile enough to be worn several times).

A nice top

Once you have your shorts sorted, then it’s time to think about what tops you want to bring. Bandeau tops are a great investment in your wardrobe as they’re light and can be worn with shorts, skirts, jeans and linen pants. When dressing for hot weather, avoid anything with too much material lest you want to be permanently drenched in sweat (no thanks).

Holiday dress

A holiday dress can take you from day to night with just a change of shoes and some new accessories, meaning you’ll get multiple wears out of it. Anything brightly coloured or linen gets a big yes from me!

Swimwear

Swimsuit shopping is rarely a fun activity, but find one you absolutely love and you’ll feel like you can take on the world.

Sunglasses

Finally, a pair of decent sunglasses. Sunglasses are functional and aesthetic; they protect your eyes from that fiery orb of light in the sky and they can really dress up an outfit too. A holiday necessity.
