It’s iconic really. A young Carrie Bradshaw – undisputed queen of the Big Apple – strolling through the streets of the city in a white tutu and heels during the opening credits to HBO’s six-season-stint of Sex And The City.
And it’s something that every woman who has ever watched the series will’relate to; that feeling of being on top of the world, walking with a stride in your step. Before being soaked by a puddle from a passing bus reels you quickly back to reality…
The Bradshaw tutu has inspired?generations of women and designers, and even put Manolo Blahnik on the map. But according to the show’s costume designer Patricia Field, who recently discussed the infamous skirt, it didn’t cost an arm and a leg. In fact, it cost a total of $5 and was found lying in a showroom bin.
Bradshaw’s popularity skyrocketed along with her style; which went from moderately trendy to iconic almost overnight it seemed.
And costume designer Field was quick on the ball to cash-in on the opportunity she had accidentally created; creating her own website – patriciafield.com – where she recreates and sells look-alike tutus for Carrie fans around the world (although sadly?they’re not as cheap as the original).
Lesson learned? One woman’s trash really is another woman’s treasure.
