NYFW15 in a nutshell

Rosaleen McMeel rounds up Fashion Week in the Big Apple.

Dion Lee proved himself a purveyor of sensual polish. For A/W the Australian designer delivered beautiful, sophisticated glamour with a touch of gender obfuscation. Lux mixed fabrics added lush texture while cut-outs, silk panels and mesh overlays reinforced Lee’s talent for playing with sex appeal. Sensuous silhouettes kept the evening wear pieces alluring for A/W.

Mara Hoffman wins the prize for coolest designer backstage before her show. Perhaps it was the designer’s spirituality that contributed to her zen-like state, but I’m guessing it was more likely her quiet confidence about the desert chic collection she was about to launch. Inspired by nature, fantasy – she’s a big Star Wars fan – and by her own travels around the world, With her signature use of print and attention-grabbing patterns, Mara Hoffman’s show was indeed out of this world.

It seemed Victoria Justice was one of the most popular FROWers at this year’s NYFW. The 18-year-old actress was in attendance at Rebecca Minkoff, DKNY and BCBGMaxAzria and gained more attention from backstage snappers than Olivia Palermo and Anna Wintour combined. Meanwhile, Amber Le Bon was sitting FROW at DKNY. The British model told me how much she enjoyed the show, confessing that her highlight was a grey coat that she’ll be coveting for some time to come. Her stay in New York was a short one though, as she has to fly home for LFW, which kicks off at the end of the week. Although she admitted she won’t be walking the catwalk, she’s looking forward to attending shows a little closer to home.

There is no easy way to apply eye glitter. Global make-up artist for Maybelline Yadim laid the models down on a towel on the floor before gently shaking tubs of eye glitter over their heavily lined brows in order to create a Blade Runner-inspired look.

Karlie Kloss wins my top model award of NYFW15. I bumped into her backstage at Carolina Herrera. The other models were buzzing about getting prepped for the show ahead when a cool, calm and collected Karlie arrived begging for a moment of mercy from the crew while she grabbed a bite of breakfast before they applied her make-up. She was carrying a GoPro camera with her to show exactly what it’s like backstage for one of the world’s most sought-after models.

Panelled skirts and cosy ski sweaters provided the focal point for Suno’s A/W collection. The inspiration? Jane Eyre’s Bertha Mason. Jean Rhys’ Jane Eyre prequel,?Wide Sargasso Sea also served up inspiration in the form of Jamaican references.

Goth met grunge at Alexander Wang. The designer had a noir moment and went back to his roots with basic black in answer to many a downtown girl’s prayers. Platform boots were paired with every look, while chain and stud detailing added a luxe finish. Some plaid pieces in the form of outerwear were also added for good measure.
