New York Fashion Week: The IMAGE Edit

New York Fashion Week: The IMAGE Edit

There was one clear winner of New York Fashion Week this season?and that was Victoria Beckham. There remains another half day of shows, and I’m excited to see what Michael Kors, Delpozo and Derek Lam present, but I can’t imagine any will produce a collection so coherent and covetable as Victoria Beckham’s. For me, it was her finest collection to date. The former pop star who spent her formative years as something of a fashion victim (who can believe that now) has spoken?for many years about her desire to design “real clothes for real women”. This New York Fashion Week, more than ever before, Beckham talked the talk while her models walked the walked. Every single item?in the collection was considered, yet not?over-thought.?From fluid georgette skirts and abstract-print knits to loose-fitting tailoring, all in rich earthy shades designed to give depth and warmth to your look, Beckham tapped into the needs of women who on any given day have many roles to play, from mothers to mentors. These clothes are the kind that will serve you well, from the school run to the meeting room. There was a pragmatic edge to the collection but at no point did it become boring (the pops of raspberry were genius), and that’s a very difficult balance to achieve.

Other highlights of the week included Diane von Furstenberg’s asymmetric hemlines?and luxe layering, while Monse proved once again that it is the go-to label for directional cuts and deconstructed shapes.
