Unless you followed Rihanna’s journey up the stairs of the 2015 Met Ball, dressed in an elaborate, incredibly heavy but jaw-droppingly gorgeous yellow creation, you might not yet be familiar with revered Chinese designer Guo Pei. Interestingly, when Rihanna approached her about wearing one of her creations, Pei had never heard of the world-famous pop star. In conversation with Refinery29 at an event recently in Paris, the designer said, “I didn’t know about her… She sent an email to my husband that she would like to wear one of my dresses, which is the yellow one. When my husband told me, I said, ‘It’s way too heavy – she’s not going to be able to wear it up [the stairs].’ But she did not give up at all.”
Now, however, after catching the attention of a few major celebrities on this side of the world, this sartorial wizard is here to stay. Though she may be new to us in the West, Guo Pei has been working as a hugely successful designer in China for over two decades, so she’s no spring chicken when it comes to the fashion world; she’s a pro.
In an inevitably wonderful partnership, Pei has just teamed up with beauty giants MAC Cosmetics for a collaboration pretty enough to set your heart aflutter. Moving far away from the plain black packaging of their standard collections, this oriental inspired series of beauty products is to die for. Like miniature works of art, here your lipstick and eyeshadows will come encased in a stunning floral design, hand sketched by Pei herself.
Available in MAC stores from October 1st and launching online at the end of September, we’re beside ourselves with excitement in anticipation of this 16 piece collection.
