Planning a special Valentine’s meal? Here are some tips for your tablescape

Signature Editions

Whether you’re planning a romantic night in or a galentine’s meal with your pals, here's how to set a truly spectacular Valentine's table.

February 14 is just around the corner, and even if you’re not ‘into’ Valentine’s Day, it’s always nice to organise a special meal. It could be for you and your partner, or with a group of friends. It’s fun to celebrate love, after all.

Maria Reidy, event planner and owner of Signature Editions is an expert when it comes to setting a gorgeous tablescape, and she’s shared some of her tips for a gorgeous Valentine’s-themed table with us.

Appeal to all your senses

Maria says that rather than getting too hung up on one element, like the food, paying a little attention to everything that makes an evening special is the way to go. “Make a playlist, cook foods that smell amazing, dress for the occasion and turn your table into something delightful.”

Candlelight is the best table accessory

“You can never have too many candles,” Maria says. “Your dinner table will really come to life as the sun sets and the flickering candles take centre stage. Layer your candlelight with tealights, low and tall holders.”

She also notes that it doesn’t have to be fancy. “Use what you have – an empty wine bottle is perfect for a taper candle, a water tumbler can be used to hold a candle or tealight.”

Put the focus on the people

Not only does Maria advise banning phones from the table – nothing kills a conversation faster – she also says to think about your seating carefully.

“Setting the table with two chairs next to each other, rather than across from each other makes for a more romantic setting. Conversation is more intimate and it’s the perfect distance for sharing dishes.”

Delegate, delegate, delegate

Don’t feel pressured to produce the perfect evening yourself. “If cooking is not your forte, book a local caterer or order in from your favourite restaurant. Practice a cocktail recipe and stock up on the ingredients required – a great way to start the evening or finish a meal. An espresso martini instead of dessert is the perfect end to a meal.”
