We're on the home stretch to Christmas now – keep your sanity intact by scheduling in some necessary downtime in front of the television (or laptop screen). From festive specials to new cinema releases, below is our round-up of the best of entertainment this week.

MONDAY

Based on a True Story Season 2, Sky Max/NOW TV

The story of the unlikely friendship between a married couple and a serial killer continues with the second season of dark comedy Based on a True Story. Season two of the series finds new parents Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan Bartlett (Chris Messina) three months into parenthood. Focused on taking care of her family, Ava is determined to resist her true crime obsession and return to work as a real estate agent while Nathan trains private tennis clients. But a series of new murders pulls her back in – is Matt (Tom Bateman) behind the slayings? Is Ava’s sister Tory (Liana Liberato), now entangled in a relationship with Matt, in danger?

TUESDAY

Blink, Disney+

After three of their children are diagnosed with an incurable eye condition, one family embarks on an epic journey to show them the beauty of the world before it vanishes for good.

WEDNESDAY

Never Mind The Buzzcocks Christmas Special, Sky Max/NOW TV

Having taken time off to celebrate a nativity of her own, the immaculate Daisy May Cooper makes her triumphant return to Buzzcocks for a raucous Christmas special. Joining her, host Greg Davies, team captain Noel Fielding and series regular Jamali Maddix, alongside comedian Chris Ramsey, singer-songwriter Ella Henderson and Capital Breakfast host Jordan North.

THURSDAY

Virgin River Season 6, Netflix

Against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth instalment promises fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles, delightful wedding drama, as well as uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport us to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s.

FRIDAY

The Young Offenders Christmas Special, BBC One

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Mairéad, Sargeant Healy and Conor are preparing for the imminent new arrival, with Conor wanting only the best for his mother. Conor is still a novice at domestic housework, including washing, so Mairéad decides to give him lessons, clearing out his wash basket thoroughly – only to discover a handgun in the basket.

SATURDAY

Ilana Glazer’s unfiltered stand-up special dives into life’s down and dirty truths, from painfully awkward high school years to navigating parenthood as a stoner mom.

SUNDAY

Mufasa: The Lion King, in cinemas

Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
