Watch: Dancers around the world are killing lockdown time by performing on their rooftops

Get lost in these mesmerising rooftop dance performances that prove creativity certainly hasn’t gone into lockdown

As everyone hangs out and works from home, it’s hard not to think about all the things you would have been doing right now if it weren’t for the pandemic. Maybe you’d be attending a friend’s wedding, or jetting off to warmer climes. Perhaps you’d be at a concert or headed to the theatre.

Much like you, performers have time to kill too and naturally they’re putting it to creative use. Because space at home is at a premium right now, they’re taking to the rooftop instead for some truly incredible spectacles.

Broadway performer and former principle at the New York City Ballet, Robbie Fairchild is holed up in the virus-struck city with his housemate, Chris Jarosz, who is also a dancer and choreographer. Cue an exquisite collection of rooftop performances by the two, aptly named “Roof Series”.

In his first video, Robbie explains why they decided to film and post their lockdown dance videos. “I like to think of dance like she’s my oldest friend who I turn to in times of my greatest joys and greatest pains,” he explains. “I am so grateful to get to jump in her arms during this time. She’s that friend that you want everyone you know to meet. So I’m sharing her with you. Hope this brings you some of her comfort and joy.”

Meanwhile in Dublin, Kevin Freeney of creative agency Algorithm filmed Janna Kemperman on a city-centre rooftop as a reminder to find a moment of solace in your everyday. It is titled “If we winter this one out we can summer anywhere,” a quote from Seamus Heaney that many people have found comforting during these strange times.

Here is just a taster of all the incredible rooftop dances performances being made out there right now.
