Watch: The trailer for Olivia Wilde’s ‘hilarious’ directorial debut is here

Olivia Wilde has just released the trailer for her directorial debut, receiving rave reviews from both critics and fans alike.

The film, entitled Booksmart, follows two best friends in their final days of high school. Teens Molly and Amy have been on their best behaviour throughout their school careers; knuckling down for exams and securing hard-earned places in well-respected colleges.

But, in their last week of school, they realise they haven’t had much fun. This comedy shows their attempt to change that.

Unfiltered

If you’re not a fan of harsh language or sexual references, this film’s not for you. This story is an unfiltered, coming-of-age comedy full of F-words and raunchy references; so much so it’s been dubbed the female version of Superbad.

It’s said to capture the spirit of our times; resonating with both parents and a new generation of teens.

A star-studded production

Booksmart is Olivia Wilde’s first venture into directorship, following years in front of the camera. The 35-year-old has previously starred in hit TV shows and movies, including The OC, House, The Change-Up and Tron: Legacy. For this film, she’s behind the camera.

Wilde is supported by an executive production team including Will Ferrell (Step Brothers and Elf) and Adam McKay (Anchorman and The Big Short).

Meanwhile, stars on-screen include Kaitlyn Dever (Last Man Standing and Beautiful Boy), Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising), Lisa Kudrow (Friends and The Comeback), and Skyler Gisondo (Santa Clarita Diet).

The response

The film has been receiving rave reviews so far, both from industry insiders and film fans alike. Some have described it as “hilarious”, “relatable” and “brilliant”.

Female producer Perri Nemiroff said, “Holy sh*t. Booksmart is an utter delight. Energy, non-stop laughs, tons of heart. What a fantastic middle finger to judging others and a big celebration of friendship. Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein are true gems and backed by a GREAT ensemble. WOW, Olivia Wilde crushed it.”

Following a preview screening at the SXSW media conference, many viewers commented on the on-screen celebration of female friendship. Melissa Plett said, “Do yourself a favour and see Booksmart as soon as you get the chance. I laughed, I cried, I danced in my seat… and now I need to go call every single one of my fantastic girlfriends.”

Booksmart is set for general release on May 24.
