This video in honour of World Down Syndrome Day has us happy-crying at our desks

Carpool karaoke is definitely one of our favourite internet fads, and it’s made all the sweeter when it’s for a good cause. In support of this year’s World Down Syndrome Day, a group of Facebook mums got together to create their own version and the result has everyone feeling warm and fuzzy.

Designer Genes is a Facebook group made up of mothers who have a child with Down Syndrome born between 2013 and 2014. The page acts as an online community, full of updates, videos and photos from the families.

Singing along to Christina Perri’s hit song A Thousand Years, 50 mums and their kids took part in a huge karaoke session. The video entitled 50 Mums | 50 Kids | 1 Extra Chromosome has gone viral with over a million views.

The project was inspired by a similar video by an organisation called Singing Hands, who have worked with many of the families in the Designer Genes Facebook group in the past. Singing Hands specialise in helping families to learn Makaton, a type of sign language that helps hearing people with learning or communication difficulties to converse using signs and symbols, along with their speech.

Singing Hands were obviously delighted to see Designer Genes giving their own take on Carpool Karaoke, commenting on the video:

“Huge congratulations to everyone involved in the making of this video for #wdsd18 – it’s absolutely fantastic! We are thrilled that you enjoyed our Makaton-signed version of this song so much that it inspired you to get together and make your own video. What a huge task to get so many Mummies and children involved – bravo to you all! Am sure the world will LOVE this as much as we do xxx”

We’re not surprised the video is so popular. What a gorgeous way to mark such an important day.
