5 Netflix movies that feel like summer

5 Netflix movies that feel like summer

To enjoy during this heatwave, of course

Granted, sitting in and watching Netflix in weather like this isn’t exactly top of our to-do lists, but when it comes to the end of the day and the sun has weathered all your energy, an hour or two cooling off in front of the TV actually sounds pretty nice.

We want the summer feeling to keep going though, especially long after this (hopefully not short-winded) heatwave ends. There are plenty of summer-ready watches on Netflix at the moment to get you in serious Leaving Cert-weather mood. Here are our favourites.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

The ultimate movie for that end-of-the-school-year, too-hot-for-maths-class feeling. This 80’s classic follows loveable rogue Ferris, along with his best friend Cameron and girlfriend Sloane, as they skip school for one glorious day in Chicago. They drive around in a dream car, go to galleries, eat fancy food, and even take part in a city parade (resulting in one of the best 80’s teen movie scenes ever). It’s cheesy, it’s feel-good, and it really makes you feel summery.

Someone Great

One of the great rom-coms that Netflix has produced in recent years, Someone Great will make you crave a night out with your friends more than ever. Jenny is a music journalist in New York and lands the job of her dreams in Rolling Stone magazine based in San Francisco. Her boyfriend of nine years Nate isn’t keen on a long distance relationship and breaks up with Jenny. Heartbroken, she has one big night left in the city to celebrate her growing up with her two best friends. It’s a bit OTT, a bit sentimental, but it works, and it will have you on Zoom for virtual drinks as soon as it’s finished.

Wine Country

One for all the years-long-friendships out there, Wine Country is a great girls trip watch. To celebrate Rebecca’s 50th birthday, her lifelong friends plan a weekend getaway to the Napa Valley. Each woman has their own personal dramas going on, excited at the chance to relax, but as the weekend goes on (and wine gets flowing), the women begin to question where their lives are going. Directed by Amy Poehler, and starring Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph, you can’t go wrong.

Wet Hot American Summer

I mean, it’s really all in the name here. The movie is set in Camp Firewood, a summer camp in the U.S, on its last day of the season. The counsellors are getting restless, and realise they have one more day to make the most of any potential holiday romances. Things get heated, as all the while the camp prepares for its final talent show that night. The movie tries to spoof the sexy teen comedies of the early 2000’s, but kind of ends up becoming the thing they’re making fun of. Nonetheless, it’s a funny, light watch that stars a whole host of before-they-were-really-famous stars – Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks.

Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again

Okay, granted, this one doesn’t land on Netflix for another few weeks, but I’m too excited about it to leave it off the list. As Sophie prepares to reopen her mother Donna’s hotel, she deals with heartache over her fathers and her husband being away from her at such an emotional time. Her troubles are mirrored by her mother’s early life on the island, as the movie flashes back and forth between present day and Donna’s arrival to Greece decades before. A great ABBA soundtrack, plenty of sun and sea and a cameo from Cher. It’s everything we want summer to be.
