Storm Aiden: Orange wind warning in place for 12 counties for Halloween

Much of the country is in for a wet and windy Halloween weekend

A Status Orange wind warning has been issued for 12 counties ahead of Halloween, as well as a weather advisory for the entire country.

As Storm Aiden passes over the country, the orange warning will be in effect at two different times. The first warning is valid from 5am until 10am on Saturday morning, and applies to  Kerry, Cork, Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow and Wicklow. The second is valid from 8am until 4pm tomorrow in Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, and Clare.

In both cases, wind speeds of between 65 to 80km/h are expected, with “severe and damaging gusts” of up to 130km/h.

There will also be a Status Yellow wind warning in place for the entire country, beginning tonight at 1am and continuing until 3pm tomorrow.

A weather advisory is in place for the weekend for the entire country, citing spells of heavy rain, very windy/stormy conditions, and some coastal flooding due to very high seas. The advisory is in place from 9pm on Friday to 6pm on Monday evening.

Weather forecast by day

Tonight will begin dry but become wet and very windy, with heavy rain and winds increasing strong to gale force, with some severe gusts, especially in parts of Munster and south Leinster. It will begin cool but become much milder over the course of the night, with temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.

On Saturday, conditions will become extremely windy across the country, with Storm Aiden tracking northwest. Very strong and gusty winds will prevail in Atlantic coastal counties, with very high seas. There will be some showers, mainly in the northwest, but it should become dry by evening.

Halloween night will see further wet and windy weather spreading from the Atlantic, extending nationwide early in the night, with minimum temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

On Sunday, rain will clear north-eastwards for a dry morning, ahead of another pulse of heavy rain in the afternoon, which will persist overnight.
