Space and Spice: Your guide to the weekend

As the autumn sets in, this week’s What’s On guide to the weekend is a cosy one. We’ve got a very exciting new national week to get involved in, and a big opportunity to Spice Up Your Life. But, although the weather is turning, there’s still outdoor fun to be had – a charity fun run and Busker festival will make sure of that. Happy weekend from IMAGE!

This week: Look to the skies at Space Week

Ireland’s newest national STEM week could be its most interesting yet. Students, families and community groups will get the chance to connect with astrophysicists, astronomers and professors to discuss the science of space and the universe. The week is great for kids, with plenty of child-focused talks and  movie screenings, but more seasoned space-buffs will get their fix with talks on STEM degrees, women in STEM and especially the launch of the Bowie festival – a celebration of the Starman himself and his love of space

Saturday: Spice up your life at the 21st Birthday Screening of Spice World

Off the back of Victoria Beckham’s hilarious British Vogue cover shoot, we just can’t get enough of the Spice Girls these days. Luckily, we can get our fix big-time this weekend, with the Lighthouse’s screening of “quite possibly one of the most important films of a generation” Spice World. Fancy dress is absolutely encouraged, so all that’s left to do is fight over who gets to be Posh.

Saturday: Do a fun-run for charity at the Simon Home Run

It’s no secret that homelessness is at a horrendous high in Dublin city, and countless charities and kind-hearted people are working hard to help out. The Simon Community does fantastic work with the homeless population in Ireland, and have hosted their annual Fun Run in the Phoenix Park to raise funds for 34 years. Whatever your running ability, it will be a really fun day, with goodie bags and celebrations at the finish line for all runners. Head along and raise some much-needed money in the process.

Sunday: Celebrate Irish talent at the Busker Fleadh

How many times have you walked through Dublin city and marvelled at the talent of some of its buskers? Well, Sunday will see them all gather in one place for the Busker Fleadh – a completely free event to celebrate independent Irish talent. Bringing together rap, rock, folk and even choir bands, the audience will have the chance to cheer for their favourites, as one act will be crowned the winner of the Fleadh, with some amazing prizes to boot. Such a fun day, and a brilliant way to get your music fix.
