Poor Sofia Vergara. The Modern Family actress is on the verge of releasing her first major film, Hot Pursuit, and recently became engaged to her boyfriend, Joe Manganiello.
It should be a time of celebration for her. However, her ex, Nick Loeb is being something of a bastard and dragging her private life into the public eye over two embryos the former couple froze together some years ago when they were considering starting a family in 2013. Loeb wants to go ahead and find a surrogate to carry the embryos, despite his and Vergara's split. When Vergara underwent the procedure to prepare the fertilised embryos, her and Loeb signed legal documents that stated the embryons could only be brought to term with both parties consent.
Now, years after the couple have gone their separate ways, Loeb is arguing that the contract be declared void, on account of there being nothing in the paperwork about what would happen if the couple ended their relationship.
Loeb has been the opposite of discreet in his battle to upend the contract. This week he even published an op-ed in the New York Times about the issue. It's a serious piece of work, with a large dash of ?what about the menz? mentality. "A woman is entitled to bring a pregnancy to term even if the man objects," he wrote, in a bid to convince the reading masses that he should go against Vergara's wishes to unfreeze the eggs.

Loeb's argument is that these embryos should not be defined as property but as life. He also says that he isn't looking for Sofia's involvement in her biological children's lives should a surrogate pregnancy prove a success, using the type of philosophy you'd hear sprouted in a religion class in a boys school. He asked: "Shouldn't a man who is willing to take on all parental responsibilities be similarly entitled to bring his embryos to term even if the woman objects?"
Here's a pointer, when you have the word woman and objects beside each other in an article about reproductive choice and consent, you should probably enroll in a human rights slash manners module when you get a chance.
Vergara is already a mother to 23-year-old Manolo and has spoken about having children with her fianc?, Manganiello. She is refusing to comment on the issue.
