Last night, Friday 8th December, alongside Universal Pictures, we were thrilled to host a very special screening of  Saoirse Ronan’s upcoming film Lady Bird at Dublin’s Light House Cinema. The formidable Irish actress attended the VIP showing and took part in a Q&A, explaining why the film and her character, struck a chord. “I could really identify with the character that was Lady Bird,” Ronan told Editor-in-Chief Melanie Morris. “[Director Greta Gerwig] put together a cast of people who were very similar to characters they were playing.”

Ronan plays Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a 17-year-old who fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mother (played by Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (played by Tracy Letts) loses his job.  Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, the American economic landscape is rapidly shifting – and so is Lady Bird. She is on the cusp of change, almost an adult; wondering what her path in life is to be and if she should accept what is there in front of her or yearn for something more. The film looks at the relationships that affect us as we come of age and exactly what it means to truly appreciate the place you call home. It’s tender, funny, hugely uplifting – and Ronan’s best performance to date.

Directed by Gerwig in her striking directorial debut, Lady bird – released in Irish cinemas on February 23rd – has already broken records with recently becoming the best-reviewed film of all time on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% score after 189 reviews (knocking 1999’s Toy Story 2 of the top spot). Ronan won the award for Best Actress at this year’s  Gotham Independent Film Awards and has also received a Best Actress nomination for The Critics’ Choice Awards (held on  January 11th, 2018) for her role in the film. Lady Bird has also been nominated for Best Picture.

Other guests on the night include Hozier, Jim Sheridan, Yvonne Connolly, Lorraine Keane and Darren Kennedy.
