Sinead O’ Connor announces that she has converted to Islam

Singer Sinead O’ Connor has announced she has converted to Islam and has changed her name to Shuhada Davitt. Shuhada means ‘martyrs’ in Arabic.

Just last year, the singer legally changed her name to ‘Magda Davitt’.

In a tweet posted on October 19, she revealed that she had become a Muslim. The post read, “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.”

In a subsequent tweet, she speaks of the wearing a Hijab for the first time saying, “My best friend Elaine just gave me my 1st hijab, she got chills all over her body when I put it on.”

The singer has been vocal throughout her career on religious issues. In 1992, she ripped apart a photo of Pope John Paul II live on US television sparking major controversy. And years later she was ordained as a priest by Bishop Michael Cox of the Catholic Latin Tridentine Church, which is a breakaway church, in Lourdes, France.
