Saoirse Ronan, Martin McDonagh Nominated For BAFTAs

Continuing their streak of nominations and wins at the Golden Globes this past weekend, both Saoirse Ronan and Martin McDonagh have been nominated for this year’s BAFTA Film Awards.

Following her win in the Best Actress category at Sunday night’s Golden Globes – she was also awarded best actress at the New York Film Critics Circle awards in New York last Wednesday, Ronan has also been nominated in the leading actress category for her performance in Lady Bird.

The Shape of Water – starring Sally Hawkins as a janitor who falls in love with an amphibious creature – leads the way with 12 nods, closely followed by Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – the indie-hit directed by London-Irish filmmaker Martin McDonagh which won four Golden Globes. It has received six nominations altogether, and he has been nominated for best director. Though as per the Golden Globes, no women have been nominated in the best directing category.

All the usual suspects of the 2018 award season run picked up a nod, including Saoirse Ronan, Frances McDormand, Annette Benning and Margot Robbie all up for the Leading Actress prize, while Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Kaluuya, Gary Oldman, Jamie Bell and Timothee Chalamet are up for Leading Actor. Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri are all up for the leading film nominations.

The awards will be handed out at the Royal Albert Hall on February 18th and this year, a new host will take the reins:  The brilliant Joanna Lumley takes over from Stephen Fry who has hosted the annual ceremony the past twelve times. She will no doubt give the show a new, refreshing – and hilarious – lease of life.
