RTÉ 2FM DJ Larry Gogan has died at the age of 81

Legendary radio broadcaster Larry Gogan has died at the age of 81.

The news was announced this morning. He worked as a broadcaster across six decades and is best known for this work on 2FM. He stayed with the station until 2019. In January of that year he moved to digital station RTÉ Gold.

During his tenure on 2FM, he became synonymous with The Golden Hour programme and his Just A Minute quiz.

Larry was born in Fairview, Dublin in 1938 and loved broadcasting from a young age. Like his fellow presenter Gay Byrne, he started his career with sponsored programmes and then worked with Raidió Éireann.

The veteran broadcaster also presented various television programmes throughout his career. These included Pickin’ The Pops, Go 2 Show and The Golden Hour.

National institution

Following the news Director General of RTÉ Dee Forbes said of Larry, “He transcended generations – whether it was a hilarious moment on the Just a Minute Quiz, the breakneck countdown of the weekly top 40, or the first play of a Christmas song – Larry didn’t just preserve these traditions, he created them.”

He is survived by his five children and 12 grandchildren. His wife Florrie – whom he met when he was 15 – died in 2002.

His death comes days after the sudden passing of his RTÉ colleague Marian Finucane.
