Radio stations across Ireland are preparing a special tribute for Jack Charlton today

Charlton’s funeral will take place in his hometown of Northumberland in the U.K today

Radio stations across the country will unite in a special tribute today to honour the passing of former Ireland manager Jack Charlton.

Charlton passed away earlier this month at the age of 85, with tributes pouring in to honour his memory as the manager of the Ireland squad.

Charlton managed the Republic’s team during their heyday in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as they qualified for their first major finals at Euro 88 and qualified for the World Cup in Italy in 1990 and four years later in 1994.

Charlton will be laid to rest in Northumberland today, but Irish fans on this side of the pond will still have their chance to honour his legacy.

The FAI are appealing to fans to wear green today to honour Charlton, and have also asked all Irish radio stations to play ‘Put ‘Em Under Pressure’ at 12:30pm to coincide with Charlton’s funeral service.

Almost 20,000 fans have signed the FAI’s virtual book of condolences, and the FAI are in talks with Charlton’s family about creating a memorial once Covid-19 restrictions have passed.

“On behalf of my mother Pat and all the Charlton family, I want to thank everyone in Ireland who has offered us so much support and sympathy at this very difficult time. It is very much appreciated,” said Jack’s son John.
