Renewing your passport online is now cheaper, faster and easier

The Department of Foreign Affairs has announced significant changes to the online passport renewal service. From Wednesday, November 28, the service will be cheaper, faster and easier.

According to the department, the cost of renewing passports online will now be €75; which is €5 cheaper than it used to be. It also cuts out the €9.50 handling fee charged by An Post for postal renewals.

What’s more, the passport office promises a turnaround time of 10 working days for all online applications.

The process itself is more straightforward. People renewing their passports online will need a digital photograph and email address.

Children’s passports

In addition to this, the passport office will now accept children’s passport renewals online, which will cost €20. Children will also be entitled to passport cards for the first time.

The department advises parents that, to renew your child’s passport, a ‘Child Passport Identity and Consent Form’ will have to be printed and witnessed at the end of the online process.

Best possible service

Speaking about the updated service, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said, “It is important that the passport service continues to use technology in order to gain efficiencies and deliver the best possible service to the citizen.”

From today, the updated renewal service will be available to all Irish citizens, anywhere in the world, 24-hours a day.
