Non-naff Halloween decorations to (pumpkin) spice up your home

You don't need to fill your home full of plastic to get into the spooky spirit. Here are some pieces to get your home feeling suitably supernatural that you won't want to hide away come November 1.

That time of year is creeping up again. The evenings are well and truly closing in, leaves line the paths and parents everywhere are wondering how on earth they're going to fashion a spider costume without spending a small fortune (try Pinterest).

Whether you're entertaining kids or not on Halloween, there's something appealing about embracing all things eerie for a day or two. What this doesn't mean, however, is that you have to fill your home full of cackling plastic witches and synthetic cobwebs.

We've found some pieces that embrace the spirit of Halloween that you'd be happy to have in your home all year round.

This set of spoons has a definite witchy feel with its mismatch of sizes, textures and shapes. You could just imagine stirring a cauldron with that ladle. Or serving punch to your friends at a Halloween party, however you get your kicks. Set of four Sadie spoons, €24, Anthropologie.

The rusty tones of this McNutt throw are obviously autumnal, but what I love even more is the distinct 70s vibe of the check, reminiscent of many classic horror films of that period. You just know you've watched an unwitting teenager wearing this pattern encounter something sinister in the woods.

You can snuggle under this blanket while watching said horror films, or use it to stay warm while watching fireworks in your garden – much safer than wandering through a forest. Wood cabin multi-check throw, €87, McNutt of Donegal.

Something unnerving is always afoot when candles are lit in a formation. Just don't mutter any spells as you light this centrepiece, and hopefully you won't summon anything sordid. Luna brass candle centrepiece, around €43, Rowen & Wren.

If your Halloween celebrations involve cooking up a delicious, warming stew, then these adorable pumpkin pots are absolutely perfect as a nod to the season.

Creating an instant centrepiece for your table, they're also not something you'll want to hide at the back of the cupboard for the rest of the year. Win-win. Heirloom Pumpkin-Lidded Cocotte, €14, Anthropologie.

This willow bird-feeder is perfectly innocuous in a normal day-to-day context, but again, if horror films (and True Detective) have taught us anything, it's to be suspicious of twig sculptures hanging from a tree.

Add some extra twigs and fronds to spook your neighbours, and rest assured that when winter sets in your local birds will be very thankful for your scary sculpture. Willow bird feeder, €35, Irish Design Shop.
