“My pronouns are he/they”: Actor Elliot Page announces he is transgender

In an eloquent statement, Academy Award-nominated actor Elliot Page has announced on his social media account that he is transgender

In a statement published on his Twitter and Instagram account, formerly known as Ellen Page, now Elliot Page shared that he identifies as trans and uses he/they pronouns.

“I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey,” writes Page. “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”

The actor also used his statement to acknowledge the struggle the trans community faces and pledged his support, highlighting the violence they face.

Discrimination

“The statistics are staggering. The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences. In 2020 alone it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women.”“Enough is enough. You aren’t being ‘cancelled,’ you are hurting people. I am one of those people and we won’t be silent in the face of your attacks.”

He has always championed the LGBTQ community, intently aware of the privilege that comes with being such a public figure.

“To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”

“I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.”

“I also ask for patience. My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared,” he continued.

Support

He is best-known for his breakout role in 2007?s Juno (for which he won the Oscar) and went on to star in Christopher Nolan’s Inception as well as a number of independent films and TV, including The Umbrella Company.

Miley Cryus, Anna Kendrick, Alyssa Milano and Olivia Munn are just some friends who have publically expressed their happiness and support for Elliot.
