MTV VMAs 2020: Lady Gaga dominates the night by winning 5 awards

Lady Gaga shone brightest at last night's MTV Video Music Awards in a ceremony that was less than normal due to coronavirus restrictions

It was a different type of awards ceremony for last night's MTV Video Music Awards.

With Covid-19 restrictions limiting most social gatherings, the famous event had to adapt. Streamed from New York City and hosted by Keke Palmer, the show was a mix of video acceptance speeches and performances without an audience.

The ceremony was dedicated to actor Chadwick Boseman, who died on Friday following an undisclosed four-year fight with colon cancer.

The show also touched on the current pandemic by paying tribute to frontline workers in New York and highlighted the Black Lives Matter movement with host Palmer saying young people have shown that they will “step up, take to the streets, and make sure they’re heard.”

Performances on the night came from artists such as The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande who performed their hit 'Rain On Me'.

It was Lady Gaga who was the big winner on the night, scooping the artist, song and collaboration of the year awards. She also won the first-ever MTV Tricon Award, an accolade that recognises her achievements in music, fashion, and acting.

In her acceptance speech, she said: "I want to share this award with everybody at home tonight. Everybody that is their own form of a Tricon...This has not been an easy year for a lot of people, but what I see in the world is a massive triumph of courage,”

She finished by urging people to wear masks saying, "I love you, stay safe, speak your mind and I might sound like a broken record, but wear a mask, it’s a sign of respect.”

Other winners included The Weeknd who nabbed best video for Blinding Lights, Taylor Swift for best direction for The Man, and Megan Thee Stallion’s Savage for best hip-hop.
