Motown, movies and midwives: your guide to the weekend is here

Granted, the title of this piece makes this weekend sound like a strange one, but we promise it’s got something for everyone. With last weekend’s rugby escapades being a bust, we’ve steered clear of sport and focused on some other varieties of past-times. Happy weekend from IMAGE!

On Saturday: Go old-school at Motown the Musical in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

If you’re a fan of motown music, then the Bord Gáis is where you want to be this month. And if you don’t like motown music, well, I’m not sure I want you reading this list, to be honest. Charting the life, times and success of Motown founder Berry Gordy, the musical will feature hits such as Ain’t No Mountain High EnoughDancing In The Street and My Girl as well as telling the story behind the songs. Incredibly, there are still tickets available for Saturday night, but if that’s too soon, the show runs all month until February 23.

On Saturday and Sunday: Throw it back to Withnail & I at the Lighthouse Cinema

The Lighthouse are gems for hosting throwback movie nights, and this weekend’s selection is a particularly great one. In honour of the brilliant Richard E. Grant receiving his first Oscar nomination this year (and subsequently being the cutest person alive on social media while enjoying the glory of his nomination), the cinema is showing the film that made him a household name Withnail & I. A cult film in the weirdest sense, I’m not really sure how to describe Withnail & I — except that if you haven’t already, you really should see it right away.

Friday and Saturday: Get some culture at the Silkroad International Film Festival

If Asian and Middle-Eastern cinema is more your cup of tea, then look no further than the Silkroad Film Festival, hosted at multiple locations around the city. The festival celebrates the talent and culture of cinema around the world, and this year, will feature films from Mozambique, China, Lebanon, Iran, France, Sweden and more. Bound to give you a new perspective on cinema, seeing the amazing talent emerging from the festival is worth heading along.

On Saturday: Stand with Nurses and Midwives at the National Rally at the Garden of Remembrance

The Nurses and Midwives protest has been one of the most publicly supported protests in a long time, and we at IMAGE are proudly standing with our country’s nurses and midwives in their fight for better pay and working conditions. If you feel the same way, head to the Hugh Lane Gallery on Saturday at 12 pm to show your support.
