Met Eireann warn of possible sleet and snow showers from Sunday

Winter is not over yet as Met Eireann forecast sleet and snow showers over part of the country into the weekend

Met Eireann has said that Ireland may experience a “risk of possible snowfall, sleet and wintry showers” all mixed with thunder over the weekend.

It will, according to the national forecaster, become more unsettled over the weekend.

Friday will be mostly dry, but predominantly cloudy, with a little patchy light rain or drizzle, mainly on coasts and hills.

Wintry showers

It will turn much colder heading into the weekend and at the start of next week with the risk of “wintry showers” and frost at night.

Saturday will be mainly dry, with a few bright spells, but mostly cloudy.  “On Saturday night, a band of more persistent rain will extend from the west. Clearer conditions, with scattered showers, will follow from the Atlantic later in the night and during Sunday morning, but it will turn cold,” according to Met Eireann.

From Sunday, it will turn cold, so the risk of scattered snow showers is most likely to start then. Most of the showers will be in Connacht, west Ulster and west Munster, some turning to sleet later, with a risk of snow showers, mainly over high ground in the west and north. Max. 4 to 8 Celsius, in moderate southwesterly breezes, freshening later.

Sunday night will turn colder still with clear spells and scattered showers, most of them in the western half of the country. There will also be a risk of frost. “Many of the showers will be wintry and there is a risk of thunder, mainly in Atlantic coastal areas. Min. 0 to 3 Celsius, with a risk of frost and icy patches,” they added.

Next week

It should turn milder by the time we get to the middle of next week, but early on will still see the need to wrap up.

It will be very cold on both Monday and Tuesday, with bright or sunny spells and scattered showers, many of them wintry, especially in Connacht and west Ulster, with a risk of thunder. “It will also be very cold overnight, with a risk of frost and icy patches,” according to Met Eireann.
